Art Basel Hong Kong 2024
Petzel is pleased to return to Art Basel Hong Kong for its 2024 edition and present works by artists integral to the gallery’s program. Artists on view will include Ross Bleckner, Isabella Ducrot, Derek Fordjour, Roger-Edgar Gillet, Tomoo Gokita, Charline von Heyl, Sean Landers, James Little, Sarah Morris, Jorge Pardo, Seth Price, Pieter Schoolwerth, Emily Mae Smith, Hiroki Tsukada, Nicola Tyson, and Xie Nanxing.

Demonstrating his experimental approach to creating his own paints and varnishes, James Little presents an encaustic painting from 2002, in anticipation of his exhibition at our Chelsea space this coming fall. Little’s paintings epitomize a precise, analytic perspective on composition, using emotive associations with color and an alchemic approach to material in his multi-layered works.
Sarah Morris debuts her new painting Lippo Centre [Hong Kong]. In her signature bold geometries, Morris reimagines of one of the city’s most iconic buildings, famous for its mirroring doubled-towered architecture and the various corporate collapses in ownership. Morris’s latest film “ETC”, co-commissioned by M+ and Tai Kwun Contemporary, documents the city of Hong Kong in the spring of 2023. The film launched on the M+ facade in January and is now installed in Morris’s solo exhibition Who is Who at Tai Kwun Contemporary, alongside a newly commissioned wall painting Lippo [Paul Rudolph].

Derek Fordjour’s new painting Showtime Shango! continues his exploration into magic as allegorical to social constructs that assign power and privilege. Assembly I—a sculpture from his fall exhibition at Petzel, SCORE—speaks to his enduring interest in questioning agency and autonomy in the face of stagnant conditions.
Sean Landers premieres a new painting, complementing his recent exhibition at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris. Landers demonstrates the importance of language in his relationship with Surrealism—a forest of birch trees with trunks covered in writing sets the scene for a portrait of a rabbit.
