Press Release

Petzel Gallery is pleased to present Andachtsbild, a group show opening May 3rd and on view through June 22nd at the gallery’s Upper East Side location. The exhibition, curated by Karel Schampers, formerly Director of the Frans Hals Museum in the Netherlands, explores various visual modes and expressions of humanity, rooting itself in the idea of devotion.

Andachtsbild presents artworks that delve into our emotional values and testify to the true experiences of human beings. It is Schampers' belief that artists are innately able to give special meaning to this subject matter as they have the ability to broach it with a broader sense of intimacy than most. Presenting the viewer with works of art that highlight eclectic interpretations of devotion and human expression will lead to a broader awareness of and engagement with what is being represented.

Andachtsbild is about love, dedication, concern, involvement, vulnerability, friendship, sincerity, consolation, and humility,” Schampers says. “The show is meant to inspire and the works selected invite the viewer to further contemplate these sentiments.”

Andachtsbild includes works by Bas Jan Ader, Francis Alÿs, Glenn Brown, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Gilbert & George, Robert Gober, Daan van Golden, Douglas Gordon, Philip Guston, David Hockney, On Kawara, Ellsworth Kelly, Martin Kippenberger, Maria Lassnig, Elizabeth Peyton, Seth Price, Dana Schutz, Andy Warhol, David Wojnarowicz and Christopher Wool.

From 1981 to 1986, Karel Schampers was the curator of prints and drawings at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. From 1986 to 2000, he was the chief curator of modern art at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Schampers was the director of the Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem for 14 years and has curated exhibitions by such artists as Isa Genzken. Gerhard Richter, Ed Ruscha, Robert Gober, Christopher Wool, On Kawara, Paul McCarthy, Diane Arbus, Wolfgang Tillmans and Gillian Wearing, among others.

Petzel Gallery is located on the third floor of 35 East 67th Street between Madison and Park Avenues, New York City. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM–6:00 PM. For press inquires, please contact Ricky Lee at ricky@petzel.com, or call (212) 680-9467.
