I've Got Love for You
ArtCenter Exhibitions is pleased to announce Jon Pylypchuk: I’ve Got Love for You, a site-specific installation and exhibition of new bronzes and paintings by Los Angeles-based sculptor, painter, musician and multimedia artist Jon Pylypchuk. The exhibition is the first to feature the artist’s songwriting, and is envisioned as a tribute to important people in his life, including his wife and his late best friend Tony Fernandez.
Jon Pylypchuk: I’ve Got Love for You presents talking ghosts and other friendly, surreal creatures who guide gallery visitors through an otherworldly landscape. Pylypchuk’s original songs will be featured throughout the exhibition, which stand as testaments to the emotional complexity of his career-long exploration of selfhood, community and estrangement.
Pylypchuk was born in Winnipeg, Canada in 1972, and became a founding member of the Royal Art Lodge, a group of Winnipeg-based artists who used humor, text and a DIY sensibility to question the tenets of modern and contemporary art. After studying at Yale University Summer School of Music and Art, he earned his BFA with honors at the University of Manitoba, and went on to complete his MFA at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Upon relocating to Los Angeles, Pylypchuk became a key figure in the burgeoning Chinatown art scene. Alongside artists and writers like ArtCenter alumni Amy Yao and Giovanni Intra, Pylypchuk was a founder of the legendary China Art Objects Gallery on Chung King Road in 1999. The gallery became essential to a new generation of Los Angeles artists.
Pylypchuk has exhibited internationally and is included in numerous prestigious public collections around the world. He mounted critically lauded survey shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland (2006), the Blaffer Gallery at the University of Houston (2009) and the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (2010). In 2015, Pylypchuk’s KIϟϟ cover band KIϟK performed at the Hammer Museum at UCLA in Los Angeles.
Jon Pylypchuk: I’ve Got Love for You is accompanied by a publication with a new essay by Chris Kraus, ArtCenter’s writer-in-residence.
Born Dead is the musical companion to the exhibition I've Got Love for You—the first to feature the Jon Pylypchuk's songwriting, Pylypchuk’s original songs were featured throughout the exhibition, which stand as testaments to the emotional complexity of his career-long exploration of selfhood, community and estrangement.
